The Cardinal Creek Community Association (CCCA) is looking for high school and college/ university student volunteers and paid rink attendants for this winter outdoor ice rink season at Cardinal Creek Park on Trim Road.  Volunteer hours will go towards high school credits. Responsibilities include preparing the base ice, clearing snow from rinks, monitoring the heated shed and rinks and flooding the rink.  Please join our community efforts this season.  Send your CV to: president@cardinalcreek.org

We have received this important message from our Councillor’s office this morning. It brings clarification to the announcement made at the CCCA AGM. Here is the email:

Hello everyone,

At the Cardinal Creek Community Association Annual General Meeting of June 10^th, 2021, I announced that Orléans was successful in its application for a share of federal infrastructure funding. I’d like to correct the announcement and tell you that the pathway directly behind Caprihani will not be paved. This was a mistake and I own it completely. The project description in the application was misleading and not accurate in describing the pathway that needs rehabilitation and improvement.

The pathway that will be rehabilitated is east of the waterway, between Cardinal Creek Park and Coyote Trail park. The photo below accurately showcases the location. It is a pathway I use often when I walk with Elliot and Norman, and I am familiar with its condition. It can use some love as it is in much worse shape than the rest of the network in the park. It’s location along the waterway presents unique challenges for construction, but that does not mean we will neglect its state and let it deteriorate further.

It is standard practice for staff from infrastructure, or parks or social services to submit applications on behalf of the City of Ottawa for Provincial and Federal funding programs, even if they include very short construction timelines, and even shorter application windows. In this case, the nearest street needed to be included for reference and did not consider the pathway that IS behind Caprihani. The process is not perfect and I have connected with them in the last few days to review and share learnings. As more information related to this project becomes available, I will be sharing with the community and community association.

Announcements like this one rarely creates unanimity. I know that there are some that will delight at this news and others that will be upset. I also know that this episode has caused frustration and panic. For those unhappy with this new development, I offer my sincere apologies.

We have been and will continue to be at our best for our community when we collaborate. In the last few days, I received correspondence that included heated rhetoric and veiled language. This is unnecessary. It will not deter me from working hard for you, using every tool made available to me, pursuing any opportunities to invest in our community. Dollars from all levels of government play a critical role in making Orléans a community to live, work, play and accessible for all.

I take away learnings from this experience. For me, it continues to reinforce the value of public meetings and consultation. Some of our best ideas and opportunities have been the result of getting our community together to look over some plans and give you the opportunity to engage with me, my team and city staff. We, as residents, know our communities best and together we can move forward. I wholeheartedly commit to holding these meetings in person as soon as it is safe to do so. I am reminded of how much we support each other, as well as how much more effective and productive we are as a team when we work together instead of against each other.

Notice of Weekend Lane/Ramp Closures and Construction Work
April 30, 2021

As part of the Stage 2 O-Train Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, motorists as well as residents, whose homes are near the OR174, should anticipate weekend mobility impacts as crews working to complete drainage and utilities work. Over the course of the weekend, work will require the closing of eastbound lanes at Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard and the OR174 to facilitate work for the future Jeanne d’Arc LRT Station construction. In addition, lane closures in both direction between the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway and Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard will take place.

What/ Where

OR174 Eastbound:

•    All lanes closed at the Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard and OR174 Interchange. Motorists will need to exit from the off-ramp to make their way over Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard to access the on-ramp to continue eastbound. Traffic will be directed by around-the-clock Duty Police.
•    Closure of the southbound Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard on-ramp to OR174 eastbound.

OR174 Westbound:

• Reduced to one lane between Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard and Sir George-Etienne Cartier Parkway.
• Residents near the Interchange can expect the following construction activities over the weekend to take place during day and night:
• Drilling and installation of drainage and utilities will occur day and night which may result in audible noise and some vibration from equipment.

From April 30, 2021 at 9 pm to May 3, 2021 at 5:30 am.

Why

The contractor is continuing work along the OR174 during the weekend to complete drainage and utility work. This work is required prior to the beginning of construction on the future Jeanne d’Arc LRT Station.

Anticipated Impacts

Noise and vibration from trucks and heavy equipment is expected.

For motorists travelling eastbound on OR174, an alternative route from St-Joseph Boulevard between Montreal Road and Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard will facilitate traffic flow for those wanting to access the Interchange area.

Motorists should adhere to detours, traffic control signage, posted speed limits, and use extra caution as traffic patterns change. Motorists should use caution and allow for added travel time when moving through active construction corridors.

For residents whose property borders the OR174 and the Jeanne d’Arc Interchange, equipment in the area may cause additional noise and occasional vibration as the work progresses. These activities are necessary to build the new Jeanne d’Arc LRT station and must be completed over the course of the weekend in order to provide a safe and operational traffic pattern on the OR174 when all ramps and lanes re-open on Monday morning. The City of Ottawa thanks residents for their patience as we work to complete these construction
activities.

Protect your bicycle! Register with 529 Garage

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is warning residents to take extra precautions to secure their bikes from thefts and register with 529 Garage.

“The program has really been embraced by Ottawa’s cycling community,” said program coordinator Sergeant Art Wong. “And our partnerships with local bike shops have been a valuable asset in helping to get people signed up.”

Along with its partners, Bike Ottawa and Safer Roads Ottawa, the OPS is encouraging cyclists to register their bikes on 529 Garage. This program is easy to sign up to through the app or online. It can help police locate a stolen bike sooner. The app was launched in May 2019 in Ottawa and to date, 6,263 residents have registered and 106 bikes have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners.

Simple things like investing in a durable lock, or putting your bike away in a locked shed or garage, will go a long way to keeping it safe from thefts.

Residents living in high rise apartments and condominiums should store their bike in designated secured enclosures, and all riders should choose bikes racks that offer high visibility and foot traffic or surveillance.

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, you can still register your bike and be enrolled in the program, but we ask that you collect your sticker at a later date if you want to get your shield from one of our police stations. While the sticker offers a secondary serial number to verify ownership of the bike and acts as a visual deterrent, it is not necessary to complete the registration.

As the weather starts getting warmer, more residents in Ottawa will take advantage and get out of the house and go for a bike ride. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but we are asking riders to still be mindful of physical distancing public health guidelines, along with any requirements to wear masks.

Ottawa — Le Service de police d’Ottawa (SPO) conseille aux résidents de prendre des précautions supplémentaires pour protéger leurs vélos des malfaiteurs, dont celle de les enregistrer grâce à l’appli 529 Garage.

« L’initiative a été chaudement accueillie par la collectivité cycliste d’Ottawa », a indiqué le coordonnateur du programme, le sergent Art Wong. « Et nos partenariats avec les boutiques de vélos de la région se sont révélés un précieux atout pour inciter les gens à s’inscrire. »

Le SPO et ses partenaires, Bike Ottawa et le Programme d’amélioration de la sécurité des routes à Ottawa, encouragent les cyclistes à enregistrer leurs vélos. Il est facile de s’inscrire au programme avec l’appli ou en ligne. Le tout peut aider la police à retrouver plus rapidement un vélo volé. L’appli fut lancée à Ottawa en mai 2019 et jusqu’ici, 6263 résidents s’y sont inscrits et 106 vélos ont été récupérés et remis à leurs légitimes propriétaires.

De simples mesures, notamment celles d’investir dans un cadenas durable, ou de ranger votre bicyclette dans une remise ou un garage verrouillé, contribueront considérablement à la préserver du vol.

Les résidents de tours d’habitation et d’appartements en copropriété devraient entreposer leurs vélos dans un local sécuritaire désigné à cette fin, et tout cycliste devrait opter pour un support offrant à la fois une bonne visibilité, un certain achalandage ou de la vidéosurveillance.
