Interprovincial Bridge: Last Chance Meeting June 17
Last chance to protect Petrie Island against the interprovincial bridge!

The next public meeting of the Interprovincial Bridge Environmental Assessment Study will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at Ottawa City Hall.  The purpose of the meeting is to present all of the final criteria (up to 40 indicators) that will be used in the selection process of the bridge and to release some key statistics on truck traffic, transportation traffic, environmental factors and noise.

This is a key meeting as this is the last time Orleans residents will have an opportunity to make their voices heard as the selection of 2 bridge crossing sites will be announced in September 2008.  Please get out and support a Kettle Island bridge crossing and save Petrie Island, the jewel of Orleans.

Cardinal Creek residents benefit under TREE, City Stream Watch programs: Volunteers needed to plant 560 native trees

Orléans, Ontario - The Cardinal Creek Community Association (CCCA) will be undertaking its largest ever Tree Planting Day on May 31st, thanks to partnerships with the City of Ottawa and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA).

The CCCA is calling all residents, families, students, boy scouts and girl guides to volunteer to be a part of our community's effort to improve biodiversity and help fight global warming by coming out to our May 31st Tree Planting. This event also qualifies for high school students seeking to add to their Community Involvement Program volunteer hours.

Under the City's Community TREE Planting Grant Program, a variety of 360 native small potted trees will be planted to improve and enhance existing forest cover along the ravine behind Mondavi Street, in the Oakridge Gate subdivision.

"As city councillor for the Cardinal Creek area, I am very proud of this initiative. I encourage residents to come out and participate. This effort is yet another important part of the transformation of Cardinal Creek," says Orléans Ward Councillor Bob Monette.

An additional 200 trees (dogwood and sumac) have been donated by the RVCA under the City Stream Watch program, to help rehabilitate and reduce erosion at various points along the banks of Cardinal Creek. City Stream Watch volunteers will also be there to help plant trees.

"Planting trees along shorelines help to create a buffer for streams. Buffers are critical to stream health, stabilizing shorelines, providing shade for fish and fish habitat, filtering excess sediment and runoff entering the stream and providing habitat for wildlife," explains RVCA City Stream Watch Coordinator Julia Sutton.

Volunteers may participate in one or both of the scheduled planting activities:

  • Oakridge Gate subdivision, 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants to meet at the corner of Valin and 2301 Mondavi streets, across from Valin Park.
  • Spring Ridge subdivision, 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants to meet at the Cardinal Creek Trailhead on Springridge Cres., between Heatherstone and Caprihani.

All participants are reminded to dress for the weather. Long sleeve shirts, pants, hats, along with gardening gloves and hiking or work boots are recommended. If possible bring a clearly labelled bucket and shovel. Pizza lunch and drinks will be provided for volunteers, courtesy of Councillor Bob Monette and Sobey's Orleans.

Volunteers are asked to register before May 24, 2008 by e-mailing Bruce Hollands at environment@cardinalcreek.org with your name, phone number and the number of volunteers in your group.

City Stream Watch Training May 24th
Volunteer City Stream Watchers Needed Saturday May 24th 9am to noon!

The City Stream Watch program is holding the second of two "Stream Watch" training sessions for community volunteers on Saturday, May 24th.  Volunteer scientists can take part in monitoring, protecting and cleaning up three city streams in Ottawa in 2008. Take this free opportunity to try your hand at being a citizen scientist, learn about stream environments and make a positive impact on our urban ecosystem.

Volunteers are requested to come to the Community Training Session to learn the easy and basic techniques of stream assessment and well as other projects planned throughout the season. The Community Training Session is on Saturday May 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at the small park at the mouth of Sawmill Creek about 100 m east of Billings Bridge Shopping Centre (Bank Street bridge at Riverside Drive).

All necessary equipment is provided and there is no cost to volunteers.  People can choose which stream or streams they wish to work on over the summer. This is a great chance for interested members of the community to learn about and help care for their local streams and also meet other dedicated stream stewards. Register now!

The City Stream Watch program is a community-based partnership which includes the City of Ottawa, Heron Park Community Association, the National Defence Fish & Game Club, the Ottawa Flyfishers Society, the Rideau Roundtable, and Rideau Valley Conservation Authority with the generous support of the Monterey Inn Resort & Conference Centre.
