Valin Park Update

The following information was provided by Louise Cerveny, Planner/Project Manager for City of Ottawa - Parks and Recreation:

Storm pond and storm water outfall construction work in the creek undertaken by the developers in November and December of 2006, created a number of problems that require a course of action above and beyond the original requirements of the City. May include restoration work.

RVCA [Rideau Valley Conservation Authority] has sent letter of notification of violation to developer (cc.’d to Councillor Monette 5 March, 2007). Issues are currently under investigation - how and when they will proceed may influence the timing and how much work we are able to do in the west end of the park. RVCA has identified the area that is not to be disturbed during park construction.

Any further inquiries regarding the violations at Valin Park should be discussed with Hal Stimson or Nancy Smith at the RVCA.

Louise has also enclosed two concept plans - Options 1 & 2 for the playground structures for Valin Park.  She would like to emphasize “that the Little Tikes proto-types are examples only and the components and theme were assembled by our Landscape Architecture consultant and based on the information from the community feedback to the “shopping list” as well as our own in-house professional experience and personal experience as parents.”

Please follow the link to Valin Park Options to view information on the two samples and provide your comments and recommendations through the online form provided.

All comments from the community are required by April 5th, 2007!

Park 18B Update

The following information was provided by Louise Cerveny, Planner/Project Manager for City of Ottawa - Parks and Recreation:

As indicated in my letter of January 24th, 2007 to Councillor Monette's office (see attached) to be forwarded on to Sean, work at Park 18B was halted in December 2006, due to poor weather conditions and saturated soils.

In December the contractor was only able to partially till the site - unfinished work resulted in uneven grades because the work is not complete. The grades will be level and to neighbourhood park standards. The contractor will commence work to complete the tilling and blading in Spring 2007, when weather permits.

The soil was tested in August 2006 indicating the soil was suitable (previous pasture lands) for growing grass seed mix for the park ground cover and therefore loam is not required. After seeding the area, signs notifying people to stay out of seeded area as well as snow fencing will be installed on both sides of existing pathway and fanned out at the road to discourage access to seeded area.

Pathway to be retained as it is a well-used pedestrian access to the open space and an established desire line to the adjacent neighbourhood.

Parks and Recreation does not have the funds to provide loam and sod a portion of the site. Estimates provided to us by the contractor on site to install 6” of loam and sod on ˝ acre is $15,500.00 inclusive.

The Cardinal Creek Community Association has moved to it's new web hosting provider - Sibername.com.  CCCA would like to thank Sibername for it's generous discount to our growing non-profit organization.

During the move to the new site we are refreshing our look and adding new features.  Please forgive the mess as we transition information from the old site to the new one.

If you have comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact us though the Contact Us page on the website, or by emailing webmaster@cardinalcreek.org
