1. DATE CHANGE FOR FALL MEETING AND HARVEST MEAL

The Date for the Fall Meeting and Harvest Meal has been changed from October 8th. The new date will be announced shortly and will be held near the end of October or in November. I will be sending out a formal invitation in the coming weeks. Please respond to that email to RSVP. As always the meeting will be catered by The Green Door.

2. Garden Plot Clean-up!

By way of reminder, please ensure that your gardens are all cleaned up before the end of the gardening season!

3. Mayoral Announcement on Community Gardens

Council carried the recommendation “Community Garden update,” which approved an additional $15,000.00 contribution to Just Food for the provisions of Community Gardens!

This is great news for Community gardens in Ottawa and couldn’t have been achieved without the fantastic work done by all of you Garden Coordinators all over the City. You guys are great – keep it up!

4. Request for Volunteers

I’m looking for some volunteers on upcoming projects. If you are interested in volunteering please send me an email. Please pass this on to anyone you think would be interested.

The main activities I currently need volunteers for currently are:

CGN Harvest Meal: I am in need of additional volunteers to assist with set up and take down and general assistance before during and after the meeting. I have four interested volunteers already and am certainly interested in having more assistance. If interested please send me an email.

Waste Reduction Week Eco-fair: This tradeshow event will take place at 347 Preston Street in Ottawa on Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. I am planning on discussing food waste how prevalent it is, tips for reduction, and linking it to composting. I am looking for 2 people to come to the event with me and assist in planning the content and preparing for the event in general. Please send me an email if interested.

CGN Wiki: I am in need of volunteers to build certain sections of the wiki pages. I know at the Fall Meeting last year we had a lot of participants interested in talking about some of our common garden challenges. Many of you provided great advice for community gardens experiencing issues that your garden has already dealt with, or has tried to solve through various means. This type of information is valuable to have on a wiki page so when gardeners face these challenges they can access a list of what others have found successful/unsuccessful. Other sections will include tips for accessing community resources, places you can go for other grants, pages of paperwork examples, how to motivate volunteers, etc. There are limitless possibilities for the way this tool can be used once it gets fully developed. I really need more volunteers to help with building it and to help provide ideas, and systems for it’s use. Please email me if you are interested in this at all!

Coordinator Training Workshop: As we discussed at the Spring Meeting this year, we would love to set up a coordinator training workshop for new coordinators. I am looking for anyone who is interested to assist in the development of this workshop. I have some ideas of what to include, but I think it is crucial to get on the ground input from those of you doing the work. If anyone is interested in assisting in the development of this workshop, or being a presenter for this workshop please let me know.

Bike Tours: I am looking for individuals interested in assisting with coordinating Community Garden Bike tours for next year. If you are interested in setting up a bike tour be sure to send me an email and over the winter we can work on outreach, route, the search for volunteers, and anything else that we need to include.
