The future community park to be built southeast of the Hydro corridor behind the East Village subdivision likely won't see the light of day before 2016 or beyond, residents learned at a City-led public consultation hosted by the Cardinal Creek Community Association (CCCA) on February 4.
A community hall, soccer pitch, tennis courts and a full-size boarded hockey rink are but some of the recreational amenities under consideration for the new community park.
Presently known as Park 18 A, the future park is a landlocked parcel of land currently without road access. Park construction can only begin once the extension of Frank Kenny Road to Trim Road is built.
The Frank Kenny extension is currently slotted for construction in the 2014-2016 phase of the City of Ottawa's Transportation Master Plan, but budget considerations could push construction timelines beyond 2016.
Orleans Ward City Councillor Bob Monette attended the consultation, and pledged to work with the CCCA to hold another public meeting with City Transportation and Engineering staff to answer residents questions about the project and its timelines.
Meanwhile, Councillor Monette reported that $6M was allocated in the City's 2010 Budget for the partial construction of the Trim Road re-alignment project, to provide the required road access to build neighbourhood park 18 B next to the Springridge subdivision.
Presently scheduled to be built in 2011, Park 18 B may include features such as a basketball court, splash pad, play structures, and a gazebo. A pathway system would also link parks 18A and B once both parks are completed.

Coyotes in East Village

Coyotes have been heard and seen in the East Village area in the ravine area. Coyotes move fast, so they are somewhere else right now.

East End Budget Meeting Jan 12th

I would like to invite you to the second 2010 Budget Consultation session which will be held on Tuesday January 12th at 255 Centrum at 7pm.
Due to low attendance our first Public Consultation held on December 10th, I felt it was necessary to hold a second consultation with the residents of Orléans in order to ensure that everyone gets a chance to share their concerns and opinions on the proposed budget.
We booked the theatre on Centrum so that it is more centrally located and is easily accessible by public transit.
Every year it is very difficult to balance the core needs of my residents against any increases in the tax rate. I would like to hear from you what you feel should be cut and what should be kept. I urge you to attend this session in order to obtain more information on the proposed budget as well as to share your thoughts with us.
As an example currently, the Audit, Budget and Finance Committee has recommended that OC Transpo reduce the service available on certain routes and even removing certain routes altogether from it's operations. The routes in Orléans are: 94, 101, 102, 118, 127, 131, 137 and 193.
There will be a bilingual presentation by city staff on the recommended changes to next years budget, after which the East End Councillors will be facilitating your questions and comments.

Je vous invite à la deuxième Consultation Publique sur le budget 2010 qui aura lieu le mardi 12 janvier au 255 boulevard Centrum à 19h00.
En raison du faible taux de présence pour notre première consultation qui a eu lieu le 10 décembre, je croyais qu'il était nécessaire de tenir cette deuxième soirée afin de permettre à tous les résidents d'Orléans d'exprimer leurs inquiétudes et leurs commentaires sur le budget proposé.
Nous avons réservé le théâtre sur Centrum puisque c'est un endroit central et facilement accessible via le transport en commun.
À chaque année, il est difficile de trouver un équilibre entre les besoins essentiels des résidents et les augmentations de taxes. J'aimerais entendre votre opinion sur ce sujet ainsi que sur les éléments du budget auquel vous tenez et lesquels peuvent, selon vous, être réduits ou éliminés. Je vous incite fortement à être résent afin d'obtenir plus d'information sur les changements proposés ainsi que pour partager vos idées avec nous.
Par exemple le Comité de Vérification, du Budget et des Finances recommande présentement à OC Transpo de réduire certains services et même des coupures complètes de certains parcours. Les parcours en question à Orléans sont : 94, 101, 102, 118, 127, 131, 137 et 193.
Il y aura une présentation bilingue par les gestionnaires de la Ville sur les changements proposés au budget 2010 après laquelle les Conseillers Bloess, Jellett et moi-même pourront faciliter vos questions et commentaires.

Navan is Hockeyville
|
The Navan Memorial Centre is registered in the Kraft Hockeyville 2010 contest. If Navan wins, the arena would receive $100 000 for upgrades, an NHL pre-season game and a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. 3 finalists are choosen in Ontario and Navan is presently 4th. Your support to the quest for the Hockeyville title would definitely be greatly appreciated by players of all ages!
Anyone wanting to help should go to the Navan Memorial Centre on the CBC website and submit a hockey related story/memory and a photo. They will judge our hockey community on the following criteria: community spirit, passion for hockey and originality- the reason we are Kraft Hockeyville 2010. Of course, the more stories the better the chances we have of being one of the twelve finalists. Deadline is January 18th, 2010.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT OUTDOOR RINKS
Dear Neighbours:
Your Cardinal Creek Community Association (CCCA) is pleased to operate two unsupervised outdoor rinks this season: one at Cassia Park in the Springridge subdivision, and one at Glandriel Park (Valin @ Glandriel ) in East Village / Oakridge Gate.
These rinks are maintained by volunteers: to offer your services, please send an e-mail to volunteer@cardinalcreek.org . High school students are welcome to accumulate their required hours through the CCCA outdoor rink program.
The rinks will open once weather conditions permit and proper base ice has been established (end of December / early January). Meanwhile, we invite you to regularly visit www.ottawarinkconditions.ca to find out the status and conditions of our rinks. Coloured flags will also be installed at both rinks to inform passers-by of rink conditions. Please keep off the ice surfaces when red flags are flying.
RINK RULES - Rink rules will be posted both on-site and are available here . Both Cardinal Creek rinks are open for Public Free Skate and/or Pick-up Hockey from 7 a.m. to Dusk every day. Hockey players are asked to respect rink users who prefer to free skate by not monopolizing the ice surfaces. Please note that special events and school/sports groups with permits have priority for rink use, per our Rink Agreements with the City of Ottawa.

L'Association communautaire Cardinal Creek (ACCC) est fière d'opérer deux patinoires extérieures non-supervisés cet hiver: celle du parc Cassia dans Springridge, et celle du parc Glandriel (face au cr. Glandriel) dans East Village / Oakridge Gate.

Research Project Invitation
|
Mike Bulthuis, as part of his PhD thesis research project (Geography, University of Ottawa), is investigating teenagers' perspectives on experiences of well-being, or feeling at home and in place, within the Orléans community. He is particularly interested in the places used on an everyday basis where teenagers feel comfortable, safe and able to relax. The project has received approval from the Ethics board at the University. He hopes that the project will benefit the community by contributing knowledge on environments that are favourable to teenagers and that foster well-being.
Mike is interested in hearing from individuals living in Orléans, and engaging youth, to better familiarize himself with the local context within which teenagers live, drawing attention to places, activities and issues of interest.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan/Plan directeur des parcs et des loisirs

The City of Ottawa wants your opinion about how recreation services will be delivered in the future. Earlier this year, many of you responded to our three white papers and we thank you for that. All of your comments were considered and contributed to the initial development of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
On Monday, November 16, the first phase of the Master Plan will be posted on the City's website at ottawa.ca/recreation and we want your feedback to make sure we are on the right track. The report with its draft guiding principles and strategic recommendations will be tabled at the City's Community and Protective Services (CPS) Committee on Thursday, November 19.
You can submit you comments via email to recreationmasterplan@ottawa.ca or if you prefer, you can present your comments to the CPS Committee in person on Thursday, December 3 at City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue.

Line Offers Help to Vulnerable Seniors
Are you concerned about a senior in your community? Are you unsure
how to help? Help the Aged (Canada) has collaborated with Ottawa
Public Health, the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario, VHA
Health and Home Support, and a network of community resources to
offer the Reaching Out to Isolated Seniors (ROTIS) program. This
program allows community members to help connect vulnerable seniors
with assistance they might need as they age.
Research
shows that up to 10% of seniors in Ottawa have little or no
meaningful contact or support in times of need. This can happen
gradually as people age. An isolated senior may be the sole
caregiver for an increasingly ill spouse, and may become more
isolated if their spouse passes away. Perhaps they leave their
community and their social network to live closer to their children.
Sometimes physical or mental health issues make it difficult to go
outside. Some seniors isolate themselves. They may be afraid to
lose their independence, or be embarrassed by physical or mental
health changes. Other seniors don’t consider themselves
“isolated,” but seem to fall more often, neglect themselves, or
have financial problems. Some seniors know their health is
deteriorating, but don’t know whom to call for help. Isolated
seniors are vulnerable to falling through cracks in the medical and
social systems. ROTIS helps seniors maintain their independence and
overall well-being by connecting them to appropriate services such as
fall prevention, chronic disease management, mental health support,
spiritual care, home helpers, and friendly visitors.

The Karst: Completion of Existing Conditions Report

The Policy Development and Urban Design Branch and its consultants have completed the Existing Conditions Report for the Greater Cardinal Creek Subwatershed Study.
A draft of the announcement to distribute to those members of the public who have expressed an interest in the study, to community organizations (e.g. Cardinal Creek Community Association), and to City advisory committees (e.g. Ottawa Forest and Greenspace Advisory Committee, Environmental Advisory committee, Rural Issues Advisory Committee) is included .
As stated in the announcement, we anticipate proceeding with the next phase of the study -- preparation of the Subwatershed Management Plan -- early this autumn. Our goal is to have the draft Subwatershed Management Plan ready for public presentation at an Open House early in 2010.

Upcoming Passport Clinics at 255 Centrum

Two passport clinics are organized at 255 Centrum Blvd., Orléans, Ontario:
Thursday, October 22, 2009,
from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Monday, November 9, 2009
1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
What you must bring with you...
- Your Driver's License or Health Card (with home address)
- You original birth certificate and/or Canadian Citizenship Card
- A guarantor (any person who has known you for at least two years and has a valid Canadian Passport)
If your guarantor cannot accompany you that day, he/she must do three things before your application can be submitted:
- Fill out and sign the guarantor section of the application form (only after you have signed, dated and completed the application in full).
- Sign the back of one of your photos.
- Sign a photocopy of both sides of your Driver's License or Health Card.
Quick tip - to save time, visit www.passport.gc.ca before hand to fill out and print your application.

Vous DEVEZ avoir avec vous...
- Votre permis de conduire ou votre carte d'assurance santé (portant l'adresse de votre domicile)
- Votre certificat de naissance original et/ou votre certificat de citoyenneté canadienne
- Un répondant (une personne qui vous connaît depuis au moins deux ans et qui possède un passeport canadien valide)
Si votre répondant ne peut vous accompagner ce jour là, il doit faire les trois choses suivantes avant que vous présentiez votre demande:
- Remplir et signer la "Déclaration du répondant" sur le formulaire de demande (après en avoir vérifié l'information signée et datée)
- Apposer sa signature à l'endos de l'une des photos.
- Signer une photocopie des deux cotés de votre permis de conduire ou de votre carte Santé.
Petit truc - Pour économiser du temps, allez au préalable à www.passeport.gc.ca pour remplir et imprimer votre formulaire de demande.
